Tonight, we've started watching the movie As Good As It Gets. I hope you'll enjoy working with it. I know I will!!!
Melvine, the main character, has an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Read about it and make a comment. What have you learnt after the reading? Do you think that learing about it will help you understand people who suffer from this disorder?
Check out these web pages or any others that will give you good information about it.

ResponderEliminarAfter reading the information about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, I realized that... I have this disorder!!! :( I have those obsessions! and I just can't control them! For example, every time I clean up my bedroom's carpet, I don't walk over it for some days in order not to get it dirty again!! and I get angry with anyone who does it! I'm crazy, I know, but these are things I cannot control, just like Mr. Udall!! However, I would never throw a little puppy away as if it was trash! Mr. Udall needs some treatment, definitely. He should check out these web pages.
ResponderEliminarAs I haven´t known about this disorder until now I´ve just thought that these kind of people were simply mad or something like that. But, once I had, at least, an idea of the topic, then I could understand better their reactions. What called my attention after reading the information given was that "they don't get pleasure when performing the behaviors or rituals, but get brief relief from the anxiety the thoughts cause". Poor people! They feel the necessity of doing it but they don´t enjoy it...
ResponderEliminarI think that most of us has an obsession for something, but, it would be horrible to have it to extremes as Mr. Udall!
I have heard about this desease before, since some years ago I watched a serie caled "Monk" which talked about a detective who had OCD and all the rituals he performed.. It is really sad to see how these people behave because they do that in order to feel safe and thus reduce their anxiety, otherwise they will feel like if everything is going out of control.
ResponderEliminarHere is a link just in case you don't know the serie and want to see what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7asXAbpLi3w
I'm in the same situation as Virgi!! :( I also have this disorder, however it is not as serious as Mr. Udall's! for that reason I don't feel so much comfortable talking about this topic..I feel identified and it's not nice at all =/
ResponderEliminarOCD is a serious condition, but yet it does not make the person crazy or really different from us. What impressed me the most is that very famous and reaaaally clever people suffered from it (Einstein,Howard Hughes, Bethoven, Darwin, etc) and some other famous people that seem "normal" to you (David Beckham, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo Di Caprio -he starred as H.Hughes, he knew what he was doing, dah-ha!)... The fact is that having a mental condition is life-longing and something people have to cope with. Maybe it seems for us all that it would be impossible to live like they do, doing all those rituals and having those obsessions and compulsions; but there are treatments and techniques for managing this kind of dissorder.
ResponderEliminarFor what I have read, and seen, I don't believe there is a clear line between a person which has this condition and one that doesn't- Yes, we may have some compulsions or fixations, but if we were OCD patients, we would be under treatment by now.
I suffer from GAD (and after a year or so of treatment I don't mind talking about it), and it would come as a surprise to you to know how many people have anxiety disorders nowadays. It's getting more and more common, tough it's not nice at all. Fortunately, there're lots of professionals, treatments and medicines to help one improve.
p.s. something short and simple about GAD if ur interested:http://www.helpguide.org/mental/generalized_anxiety_disorder.htm
it is true that all of us have some kind of obsession or little neurosis or something else! Perhaps, the important point is to be informed for two reasons: on the one hand, if we have characteristics that make our life harder, information may give us tools to cope with it. On the other hand, knowledge about this kind of condition will give us greater understanding of people who suffer from it.
ResponderEliminarWhether it's OCD, GAD or others.... we all have conditions in life that help us face difficulties and therefore, make us grow spiritually and buil our strength.
I also meant to thank you all for your sincerity when making comments! I feel this blog will help us learn a lot about each other!
ResponderEliminarActually, I had already read some information about this before. It has always been something that caught my attention. I know people with some disorders of the kind, and it is not something to underestimate. I think that I suffer from an OCD. When I have to go out, I need to repeat several times if I have all I need, for example “money, keys, cell phone”, but I REALLY need to do it and it’s very upsetting, but I have to. Of course, there are more serious cases, but I understand those people very well, and it is not that easy to cope with that.
ResponderEliminarAfter having read from different sources I can now understand in a more complete way what Obsessive-compulsive disorder means. But I also think that it’s a very serious mental disorder, which is becoming more and more common nowadays. It is very important that a person who may feel identified with all the obsessions and compulsions get some help as well as medical treatment.
ResponderEliminarIn my opinion, OCD is not something dangerous, though people with this problem may find difficulties in interacting with other people. Therefore, it affects people’s social context. For this I believe that Mr. Udall is not a nice person, at least with his neighbourghs
I totally understand people who suffer from this disorder, because those are things that they can't control, as the name says, they do it compulsively. Another reason why I understand them is that I have a kind of obsession, I love order....everything in my house has to be ordered, anything has to be out of its place, if I see something moved from its place, I have to accomodate it. I know that it is really stupid...but as Melvin, I cannot control it. So in a way, I feel identified with him and all the people who suffer from the same disorder.
ResponderEliminarJosefina, Luciana and Gina: thanks for your comments and interesting points of view. It seems we all have a compulsion about something. As we advance in the movie, you'll get a better insight to this disorder.
ResponderEliminarI go along with the girls and I totally understand what this obsessive-compulsive disorder means.I know a woman who suffered it and I remember that at 1st we said that she was a "soup- holic" and laugh at her. But after a while, this kind of behaviour got worse and we got worried. At that moment, we realized that she was ill and that she needed a special treatment. For this reason, we should pay attention to common obssesions, though they seem silly they could turn into something dangerous.
ResponderEliminarI did not know anything about this disorder till we started watching the movie. I've never meet a person who suffers from it, and I've never either read or listen something about it!! Now that I got to know what this disorder is about, I think it's not really a serious thing, but people who suffer from it have to be aware of their problem in order to avoid this disorder from getting worse. Something that surprised me, is the fact that one in 50 adults suffers from it, and I had no idea it was a so common! While we go on watching the movie, I find Melvine's behavior a bit funny, but because I think he exaggerates, I think he is behaving like that because he is just acting, but I don't think it can be funny in real life because these people cannot control their compulsions.
ResponderEliminarMavi and Laura: thanks for your comments. It's good to learn about situations that bother people and sometimes we don't understand.
